Come & make clear YOUR opposition to proposed web censorship by the Australian Government, at this event for the People.

Date: Saturday, March 6, 2010
Time: 12:00 – 3:00pm
Location: Forrest Place, Murray St. Perth CBD

Stop the Filter (http://www.stopthefilter.org) is organising a Rally to express Public opposition to the introduction of the Australian Government’s proposed mandatory internet filtering plan. With no legislation yet tabled, the Government’s position is best put forth by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy – Stephen Conroy’s – initial media release on the proposition:

As well as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s comments on Channel Seven’s “Sunrise” Program, 26th of February, 2010:

“It’s called, ah – ‘refused classification material.’ What’s it involve? Acts of child abuse, acts of sexual abuse against children, including material which also – ah – provides ‘how to’ kits in terms of conducting terrorist attacks. We have a very hard line approach on this. Is any system perfect in dealing with it? No. But is our challenge to reduce it to the absolute extent – ah – possible? Yes. And remember, what we’re doing here is the same treatment that you extend to any piece of, ahh, material out there in movies, in videos, and now we’re seeking to do the same when it comes to this; ‘awful material.’ Ah, which I think Mums & Dads watching the program this morning would be really worried about.”

The Rally will be held in Forrest Place on Saturday, the 6th of March at 12 midday, as a part of the National Day of Action. Greens Senator Scott Ludlam is again a speaker for the event, along with a representative from the Liberal Democratic Party and the Socialist Alliance. We are also fortunate to have Iranian ex-patriot Foad speak, who has lived most of his life in Iran and was an activist over there for a long time. He will speak about what internet censorship was like over there.
